Lot 187:
A Collection of British and Commonwealth Military Brass Uniform Buttons
Description
A collection of stamped brass and copper alloy military uniform buttons, primarily of United Kingdom and Canadian origin, dating from the early to mid-20th century. The group includes a British Army button from the reign of King George VI (1936-1952), identifiable by the Garter surrounding the letters GR VI below a Tudor-style crown, with a scroll inscribed REGIMENT. One button is a Canadian General Service pattern, featuring the word CANADA above a Tudor crown and shield containing maple leaves. Several other buttons are of the standard British General Service pattern, depicting the Royal Coat of Arms with the lion and unicorn supporters. One button appears to be regiment-specific, with a circular border containing text that includes the word SHIRE.
Condition report:
The collection shows a range of conditions. Most buttons exhibit a heavy, dark-aged patina and signs of surface oxidisation commensurate with age and use. The George VI button maintains a notably bright, polished finish. Stamped relief details remain generally clear and well-defined across the majority of the pieces.
