Lot 186:
Northern Ireland Ulster War Memorial Building Fund Gilt Metal Lapel Badge
Description
A die-struck commemorative fundraising lapel badge for the Ulster War Memorial Building Fund. The badge is constructed from gilt-finished base metal and features a circular form with an integral scroll detail to the right side. The obverse design depicts a central coat of arms consisting of a shield divided by a cross, with the Red Hand of Ulster visible in the upper-left quadrant. To the left of the shield is a winged figure. The design is bordered by the embossed inscriptions MEMORIAL BUILDING FUND at the top and ULSTER WAR MEMORIAL at the base. The scroll is inscribed with the motto WE WILL REMEMBER THEM. The reverse shows a mirror-image stamped impression of the front design and is fitted with a horizontal brooch-style pin and C-clasp. Such badges were produced to raise funds for the Ulster War Memorial Building in Belfast, which serves as a memorial to those from Northern Ireland who served in the World Wars.
Condition report:
The badge is in good vintage condition. There is visible surface wear and thinning to the gilt wash, consistent with age and use, revealing the base metal on higher points of the relief. A natural aged patina is present in the recessed areas. The pin and clasp mechanism is intact and functional.
