A Victorian Style Cast Iron and Wood Garden Bench
Description
A Victorian style garden bench featuring ornate cast iron ends and horizontal wooden slats. The heavy cast iron standards are finished in a green paint and decorated with intricate openwork designs including scrolling foliate motifs, a central circular flower head, and decorative finials at the top of the backrest. The armrests follow a serpentine form. The seat and back are constructed from multiple wooden slats secured with bolts. No maker marks, foundry stamps, or registration numbers are visible on the metalwork.
Condition report:
The bench is in an as-found, weathered condition and requires restoration. The cast iron ends appear structurally sound but show surface wear, oxidation, and significant paint chipping throughout. The wooden slats are heavily distressed, exhibiting surface rot, biological growth, and total loss of finish. Several slats are misaligned, and the overall integrity of the timber suggests replacement is necessary for functional use.
