Lot 196:
Ward Brothers Scottish Style White Metal Thistle and Pebble Brooch
Description
A mid-20th-century circular openwork brooch in the Scottish pebble jewellery style by the maker Ward Brothers. The brooch is constructed from white metal with a textured cast finish and features four thistle motifs at the cardinal points linked by C-scroll borders. The central floral-like cluster is set with five teardrop-shaped cabochons in various colours, including rust-red, dark green, pale green, and cream, designed to imitate traditional Scottish agates and marbles. The reverse is fitted with a pin and rollover safety clasp. A small raised rectangular cartouche containing the initials WBS is visible on one of the scroll elements, identifying the manufacturer.
Condition report:
The item is in good vintage condition. All five cabochon stones are present and securely held within their settings. The metalwork shows characteristic surface wear and significant tarnish and oxidation on the reverse side consistent with age. The pin and clasp mechanism are functional.
