Lot 189:
Two Items of British Military Badges and Personal Equipment Including a Buckle for S. Lyle
Description
This lot comprises two pieces of British military interest, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The first item is a small white metal buckle, likely intended for a chin strap or personal equipment, which has been personalised with an engraving. The face of the buckle frame is marked with the name S. LYLE above the service number 13052. The buckle features a single prong and a simple rectangular frame with a rounded extension. The second item is a unit identifier badge in the form of a Roman numeral III, constructed from stamped white metal. The face of the insignia is decorated with a stamped scrollwork pattern and a beaded border. The reverse is fitted with two loop lugs for attachment to a uniform using a split pin. This style of badge was typically used by British Volunteer or Territorial Force units to indicate battalion numbering.
Condition report:
The personalised buckle displays significant surface wear, tarnishing, and some pitting consistent with age and field use. The Roman numeral badge is in generally good condition, showing light oxidation and wear commensurate with age. Both pieces remain structurally intact and the lugs on the badge are secure.
