Lot 155:
A Pair of White-Ground Style Terracotta Oinochoai
Description
A pair of small terracotta wine jugs, or oinochoai, decorated in the Classical white-ground style. Each vessel features a trefoil mouth, a high-arched handle, and a bulbous body on a short-ringed foot. The exterior is hand-painted with polychrome figurative scenes in red, yellow, and brown over a white-slipped ground, featuring motifs such as a winged figure and stylized palmettes. The underside of the bases bear handwritten ink inscriptions: E 12L, Pt of, CLASSICAL PERIOD, 4140 BC, and P 14375.
Height: approximately 11.5 cm.
Condition report:
Both vessels are in poor, distressed condition with significant flaking and loss to the white slip and painted surfaces, exposing the underlying reddish-brown terracotta. There is extensive crazing to the remaining slip. One jug shows a small metal repair where the handle joins the rim. General surface wear and accumulated soil throughout.
