Lot 338:
Mid-Century Geometric String Art On Black Support Board
Not sold
Description
A mid-century modern string art composition, featuring a series of geometric and parabolic forms constructed from light-coloured silk or metallic thread. The work is oriented horizontally on a rectangular black support board and is divided into three primary sections. To the left is a flared trumpet-like form that transitions into a central symmetrical shield or mandorla shape, containing a complex lattice of overlapping threads. A row of circular openwork motifs connects the centre to a large radiating semi-circular fan on the right. The thread is tensioned across fine nails or pins to create mathematical curves characteristic of the Op Art movement. A small T-shaped metal bracket is positioned at the base of the central section. The piece exhibits the intricate hand-tensioning techniques prevalent in 1960s and 1970s decorative string artwork.
