A Vintage Bulldog Tools long-handled steel hedge slasher
Description
A vintage long-handled billhook, commonly referred to as a hedge slasher, manufactured by Bulldog Tools in Wigan, England. The tool features a broad, single-edged curved steel blade with a socketed mount. The blade is fitted to a long, tapered hardwood shaft that terminates in a slight rounded knob. Stamped into the face of the blade is the maker mark bulldog followed by the words MADE IN ENGLAND.

Condition report:
The item is in weathered, as-found condition. The steel blade exhibits significant overall surface oxidation and heavy pitting, with a dull cutting edge showing signs of historical use and sharpening. The wooden shaft shows various scuffs, stains, and darkened areas consistent with age and outdoor use. There is a significant wrap of black adhesive tape around the transition between the metal socket and the wooden handle, likely indicating a historical repair to secure a loose head or to reinforce the wood at the socket point.
