Lot 29:
A Pair of Early 20th-Century Pictorialist Monochrome Prints, On The Thames and Clyde Docks By Night
Description
A pair of early 20th-century monochrome atmospheric prints, likely photogravures, executed in a soft-focus Pictorialist style. The subjects comprise two night scenes: one depicting a tree-lined street with illuminated windows, and the other showing a dockside with building silhouettes and ship masts. Each print is presented in a deep-profile, reddish-brown stained wooden frame with a gilt-finished inner slip. Every frame is fitted with a small brass plaque; one bears the inscription ON THE THAMES and the other bears the inscription CLYDE DOCKS BY NIGHT. The prints are held under glass with hardboard backing secured by tape.
Frame dimensions: approximately 140 mm x 120 mm.
Condition report:
The wooden frames exhibit surface scuffing, minor scratches, and wear consistent with age. The prints appear to be in stable condition with no immediate evidence of foxing or silver mirroring. There is a noticeable accumulation of dust on the glazing.
