Lot 279:
Antique Masonic Shriners Style Letterpress Printing Block
Description
An antique letterpress printing block consisting of a relief-cast metal plate mounted onto a shaped wooden base. The design features a fraternal Masonic emblem composed of a five-pointed star superimposed with a crescent moon and a central vertical scimitar or sword. This iconography is consistent with the symbols used by the Shriners or the Daughters of the Sphinx. The metal printing surface is a dark-patinated alloy, likely lead or zinc, featuring a deep relief for ink transfer. The base is carved from an octagonal piece of hardwood, such as cherry or mahogany, showing a tight grain. While visually similar to items manufactured by M.C. Lilley, this block bears no visible maker marks or inscriptions.
Dimensions: approximately 35mm x 35mm.
Condition report:
The item is in good antique condition. The metal relief plate is securely mounted and retains crisp edges to the design. The wooden base shows typical signs of age and use, including surface wear, minor dings, and historical ink staining on the sides.
