A Collection of Vintage Brass and Brass-Clad Fireside and Decorative Items
Description
An assortment of brass fireside and household items, primarily of mid-20th century British manufacture. The collection includes a sloped-front coal or kindling box with a wooden internal carcass, clad in embossed sheet brass featuring a maritime scene of a three-masted galleon on the lid and a fleet scene on the front panel. Also included is a brass-clad magazine carrier with a central wooden divider and a curved metal handle, decorated with a repousse scene depicting sailing ships. A rectangular cast-brass planter or trough features high-relief floral and foliate scroll decoration and is supported by four ornate feet. The group further contains three fire irons with decorative cast handles: one terminal depicts a three-masted sailing ship inscribed HMS VICTORY, another terminal features a stylised cat with a bow tie, and the third features a horse’s head set within a horseshoe. Completing the collection is a small circular brass dish with a fluted, scalloped rim.
Condition report:
The items show heavy oxidation and surface tarnish consistent with age and use near a fireplace. Verdigris is present in the recessed areas of the embossed and cast work. The magazine rack exhibits structural wear, with adhesive tape present on the upper corners of the brass cladding. The coal box stands on block feet with some surface wear to the base.
