Description
A portable apothecary or medicine chest from the late 19th or early 20th century. The rectangular wooden case is bound in a brown pebble-grain leather and features a hinged lid secured by a small brass tab fastener. The lid is gold-stamped with the initials C. E. C. The interior is divided into six horizontal wooden compartments. The case contains several clear glass vials, each with a ground-glass neck and matching ground-glass stopper with a flattened butterfly-form grip. Also present are two small tapered cork bungs. Two of the six compartments are currently vacant. No maker’s marks are visible on the case or the glassware.
Case length: 13cm
Case width: 9cm.
Condition report:
The leather exterior shows age-related wear, including scuffing, rubbing, and minor losses at the corners and edges. The interior wooden partitions are intact. The glass components appear to be in good condition with no visible cracks or chips. The kit is incomplete, with two bottles missing from the original set of six.
